So why are people incredibly self critical?

I think it’s partly due to punitive beliefs or schemas.

There is often a strong belief within our current society that if someone does something wrong, they need to be punished or if I do something wrong, I need to be punished.  You can see this nearly everywhere around us.  It’s part of our our values, beliefs and culture.

Habits from upbringing and what we see around us too perhaps.

Of course it’s a spectrum. If one is too self reflective and detached, it may not drive action.

If one is too self critical, it may cause too much stress and triggers a fight, fight or freeze response.

Somewhere in between would be nice perhaps.  It’s a difficult balancing act for sure, but it’s not impossible.
